This is going to be a rant.

This is a video of New Hampshire State Representative Nancy Elliott, expressing support for HB1590, a bill to make gay marriage illegal (again) in her state. Her main point is that gay marriage involves anal sex, which she then describes as “taking the penis penis of one man and putting it  into the rectum of another and wiggling it around in excrement.” She says “And you have to think…would I allow that to be done to me?”

This post has nothing to do with best of/end of the year/end of the decade/retrospective. Jes sayin’.

So a friend sent me a link to this New York Observer essay. After reading it several times, I’m 99% sure it is a joke, a satire on the way we’ve taken to describing various types of women as cats (for a much funnier and clearly satirical article, see this blog response to the Observer article. The original article describes the behavior of the “cheetah,” a term used to describe “women past the first flush of youth wanting to date or at least fuck ‘above their station.'”

Lovely.

The October 2009 issue of Glamour has an article by Elna Baker called “Yes, I’m a 27-year-old Virgin.” It isn’t available on line, but here’s a Youtube video of Baker’s standup act that goes over much the same territory (although the bit about making a Halloween costume that’s supposed to resemble a fortune cookie but ends up looking like a vagina is unique to the video):

Sunday quickie

On Thursday, an advisory panel suggested that the FDA approve the use of Gardasil (the HPV vaccine) for boys and men as well as girls. According to lead scientist Anna Giuliano (as reported on CNN), “, “the data clearly demonstrates that there was a benefit to men in receiving Gardasil. Overall, we saw a 90 percent reduction in disease – genital warts and pre-cancerous lesions — caused by HPV in men and an 89 percent reduction in genital warts incidence.”

This is wonderful news and I hope the FDA accepts the recommendation. But I’m also reminded that when Gardasil was first introduced, the religious right went bonkers, claiming that if young women knew they were protected against HPV, they’d turn into sluts, sleeping with anything that moved (this is, of course, the group that also claimed condoms cause pregnancy). So I’ll just be interested to see if the suggestion that men be similarly protected will lead to similar outrage.

A friend and reader, gothicfeline, sent me a CNN story about a “John school“–a one day program for men arrested for soliciting a prostitute. They spend a Saturday being scared limp (sorry, couldn’t resist) by “former prostitutes, health experts, psychologists and law enforcement officers” until they understand that prostitution is not a victimless crime. This article pleases me in one way–it’s good to see that men as well as women are getting punished, rather than just the women. But the implicit attitudes about sex made me very sad indeed.

This morning, Dana of Mombian sent us this link to an article about a documentary called Orgasm, Inc., which details the pharmaceutical industry’s mission to profit from FSD (female sexual dysfunction).  While I applaud the author for deriding the notion that women who lack sexual desire should be characterized as “dysfunctional,” I think this article (and others on the topic) miss the underlying assumption that makes the FSD phenomenon so troubling. The issues involving Caster Semenya, the gold medal runner who has been asked to undergo genetic testing, are complicated and multi-layered, and lay bare many of the assumptions we hold about gender.

First there is the simple question of why she is suspected of being a man at all, which is apparently simply that she looks “mannish.” Russian runner Mariya Savinova is quoted as saying “Just look at her.” Well, here’s a picture: (more…)
